This past Friday, Pam Bondi assigned interim US attorney Jay Clayton to oversee an investigation into opponents of Donald Trump and their links with the late financier. This action came shortly after Trump instructed her to begin the investigation.
During an announcement, the Attorney General commended Clayton as âone of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the countryâ. She added, âThe department will handle this matter promptly and thoroughly to provide clarity for citizens.â
This action seems to diverge from a July memo from federal authorities which stated that documents related to Epstein lacked grounds for further inquiries. According to the document, investigators âdid not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third partiesâ
This news coincides with increasing demands from the president on congressional Republicans to block the full release of Epstein-related documents ahead of an key congressional decision in the coming days. Many Republicans are expected to back the disclosure.
Recently released communications from Epstein have spotlighted the presidentâs past involvement with the sex trafficker, including information that he was more aware of Epsteinâs actions than earlier acknowledged.
That same day, Trump announced he would direct the Department of Justice to examine connections between Epstein and Democratic figures, including Bill Clinton, Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman. Interestingly, Trump also referred to the âEpstein situationâ as a âscamâ.
Other notable events included calls to protect national parks, criticism of an monitoring group, and a judgeâs decision for a settlement in the Purdue Pharma lawsuit.
